Staff Database Administrator - Remote Opportunity

About the Role

We’re hiring a Staff Database Administrator to support and protect the sum of all human knowledge, shared by Wikipedia and its sister projects. This Staff Database Administrator remote position offers a unique opportunity to work with cutting-edge technology while making a tangible difference on a global scale.

What You'll Do

• Ensure the health and performance of Wikimedia’s production relational database systems, including MariaDB and MySQL.
• Deploy, maintain, and troubleshoot relational database systems in production, development, and staging environments.
• Design, implement, manage, and automate multi-site replication topologies.
• Consult in the design of database schemas and queries, overseeing schema changes in production.
• Monitor, debug, and optimize database query performance.
• Improve observability of database infrastructure through alerting and metrics.
• Participate in capacity and infrastructure planning, including on-prem bare-metal hardware.
• Contribute to the automation of common database management workflows.
• Enable reliable generation and timely restoration of database backups.
• Maintain relationships with MariaDB upstream projects and work with upstream developers on bug identification and resolution.
• Participate in a 24/7 on-call rotation for incident response and follow-up on system outages or alerts.

Requirements

• 6+ years of experience in a hands-on DBA role, with advanced proficiency in MariaDB or MySQL.
• Strong SQL skills with experience in query and schema optimization.
• Experience with high traffic and highly available website architectures.
• Knowledge of Linux and IO/data storage concepts.
• Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment.
• B.Sc. or M.Sc. in Computer Science or equivalent work experience.

Nice to Have

• Proficiency in automation/programming/scripting (Python).
• Experience with SRE practices and tooling.
• Familiarity with LAMP stack technologies and MediaWiki.
• Strong track record of open source contributions.
