Senior Backend Engineer - Main Application Team (Remote)

About the Role

We’re looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to join our Main Application Team (MAT) at Rossum.AI. In this remote role, you’ll play a key part in designing and evolving the backend systems that power Rossum’s core product, supporting complex document processing workflows and data flows used by customers at scale. This Senior Backend Engineer position goes beyond implementation; our engineers understand that technical debt and scalability are critical issues we need to address, and we’re looking for you to help shape those solutions.

What You'll Do

• Design, implement, and maintain backend services and APIs in Rossum’s core platform.
• Take ownership of larger backend features or components from initial design through to production.
• Write high-quality, well-tested code with a constant focus on scalability, reliability, and security.
• Partner across departments, participating in code reviews to offer constructive guidance and collaborating with Frontend and Product teams.
• Proactively identify and address performance, reliability, and operational issues to drive technical excellence.

Requirements

• Strong professional experience in backend engineering within a production environment.
• Advanced knowledge of Python (or a similar backend language) and a solid understanding of relational databases.
• A balance of hands-on execution and strategic thinking, specifically in designing REST APIs and operating backend services.
• Experience with AI coding tools and a proven track record of owning features through their full lifecycle.
• A proactive and empathetic approach to communication and cross-functional collaboration.

Nice to Have

• Experience with distributed systems, messaging, and cloud-based architectures.
• Familiarity with Docker, CI/CD pipelines, or infrastructure tooling.
• A passion for mentoring junior engineers or acting as a technical point of contact.

What Success Looks Like

Within your first year, you’ll build a strong understanding of our backend architecture and start delivering changes independently as a reliable contributor to the team. You will own larger features end-to-end and begin improving existing systems through refactoring or performance tuning.
