Staff Backend Product Software Engineer - AI & Media Focus

About the Role

We are seeking a Staff Backend Product Software Engineer to join our team remotely. This Staff Backend Product Software Engineer remote position offers the chance to tackle complex engineering challenges at the intersection of product, technology, and business outcomes. You will lead and mentor a sizable team of engineers while influencing architectural and technical decisions that shape large-scale, consumer-facing systems.

What You'll Do

• Lead the technical delivery of a team of 15–20 engineers to achieve high-impact customer and business outcomes.
• Shape technical direction and partner with Product Management as the direct responsible individual (DRI) for key company-wide initiatives.
• Tackle complex, ambiguous problems and design solutions that create scalable, long-term impact.
• Develop and maintain foundational system components, coding hands-on in critical parts of the product.
• Influence technical roadmaps across teams, promoting alignment and breaking down silos.
• Architect systems that support new product capabilities and operate reliably at large scale.
• Set and uphold high engineering standards, mentoring peers, and fostering excellence in a virtual-first environment.

Requirements

• BS, MS, or PhD in Computer Science, related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 12+ years of experience in software engineering, with proven success in consumer user-facing products.
• Expertise across multiple domains, including at least three of the following: search, media systems engineering, performance engineering, modern ML, LLM-based APIs, or agentic frameworks.
• Strong hands-on coding skills and experience building scalable, high-performance systems.
• Experience leading cross-functional teams and influencing technical strategy at the org level.
• Excellent communication, documentation, and collaboration skills in large, distributed teams.

Nice to Have

• Experience using AI tools for technical design, prototyping, and production coding.
