About the Role

Join us as a Controls Engineer remote at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) and make a significant impact on the world! We are seeking a talented individual to support our Controls Engineering and Maintenance group within the National Ignition Facility & Photon Science (NIF&PS) Directorate. This is an exciting opportunity to work with the world’s most energetic laser and contribute to groundbreaking advancements in fusion energy.

What You'll Do

  • Develop, implement, and maintain industrial control systems, primarily based on programmable logic controllers (PLCs).
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to establish control system requirements and provide innovative solutions for complex problems.
  • Utilize advanced technical knowledge to support troubleshooting efforts and conduct Failure Modes and Effects Analysis.
  • Mentor junior staff and guide them in production and commissioning activities on subsystems.
  • Participate in formal and informal code and design reviews while adhering to strict configuration management processes.
  • Lead project teams in the development and deployment of control solutions.
  • Provide software solutions for device-level controls and automated processes, ensuring robust integration with associated hardware.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation to support operations outside of regular business hours.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance.
  • Advanced experience with PLC programming and control system automation.
  • Proficiency in software configuration management tools and device/instrument control.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present technical information effectively.
  • Experience troubleshooting control systems in an operations environment and mentoring team members.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate in a multidisciplinary environment with scientists and engineers.
  • Significant experience in the design and deployment of personnel safety interlock systems or process control automation.

Nice to Have

  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science.
  • Experience with Rockwell’s ControlLogix PLC family and RSView/FTView.
  • Understanding of System Engineering concepts and Failure Modes and Effects Analysis.
  • Expertise in developing complex automation sequences for utility systems.
