About the Role
We are seeking a Vice President of Engineering to join The New York Times team in a remote role. As the VP of Engineering, you will lead the evolution of our digital platform, driving technological innovation and shaping our AI strategy. This position is pivotal in helping millions of readers make informed decisions about products they use daily.
What You'll Do
- Lead a world-class team of over 40 engineers, fostering an inclusive culture and attracting top talent.
- Drive ambitious feature delivery and rigorous experimentation to enhance the reader experience.
- Lead Wirecutter's AI strategy, staying ahead of AI trends to evolve both internal processes and consumer-facing products.
- Build and maintain systems that can scale for peak demand, ensuring readiness for product launches and high-traffic events.
- Shape engineering strategy in alignment with organizational goals, contributing to P&L management.
- Collaborate with product, editorial, and technology teams to deliver effective solutions and maintain strategic alignment.
- Champion the mission of The New York Times, translating goals into clear deliverables for your team.
Requirements
- 10+ years of experience leading multi-layered engineering organizations.
- Experience in both fast-paced and structured environments, effectively merging the best practices of each.
- A vision for AI-augmented engineering, with a strong understanding of tools like Claude Code and Cursor.
- Strong change management skills, capable of driving cultural shifts within a large engineering team.
- Proven delivery instincts, balancing speed with quality in project execution.
- Full-stack technical fluency, with experience in AWS, JavaScript (React, Next.js), Node.js, and more.
- Experience leading distributed teams and building a cohesive culture in hybrid environments.
- Comfort with complexity, advocating for your vision while adapting to organizational needs.
Nice to Have
- Experience with AI tools and their application in engineering.
- Familiarity with building and maintaining shared tools and services.
- Previous roles in media or journalism industries.
