About the Role

We are seeking a Staff Engineer - Technical Mitigations Research to join our team at Lila Sciences. This role is pivotal in building a high-agency AI safety team that will collaborate with all core teams within our organization. As a Staff Engineer, you will focus on creating a bespoke safety strategy tailored to our specific goals and deployment strategies. This Staff Engineer remote position is designed for someone who is passionate about AI safety and wants to make a significant impact in the field.

What You'll Be Building

  • Develop and implement safety systems that ensure the secure deployment of our scientific capabilities.
  • Set the build and research strategy for Lila’s safety systems, including safety post-training and automated safety-testing systems.
  • Conduct initial safeguards experimentation tailored to Lila’s scientific needs.
  • Lead a small team to execute on the build and research agenda.
  • Collaborate with domain-specific experts and contribute to high-quality research efforts.

Requirements

  • 4-6+ years of experience in technical engineering with ML systems.
  • Proven track record of building safety systems and classifiers for frontier-class problems.
  • Experience in developing scalable, production systems, not just prototypes.
  • Ability to communicate complex technical concepts to non-expert audiences effectively.
  • Experience in applying ML to biological or physical sciences is a plus.

Nice to Have

  • Experience in building safeguards for scientific risks related to frontier models.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams towards engineering goals.
