Senior Software Engineer - Geometry for Space Imaging

About the Role

Join Planet as a Senior Software Engineer - Geometry remote position, where you will play a pivotal role in enhancing our geometric models for space imaging. At Planet, we leverage the power of space to provide critical data that impacts various sectors, including commercial, environmental, and humanitarian efforts. As a part of our Calibration and Validation (CalVal) team, you will design and implement automated processes that ensure our products exceed rigorous geometric specifications.

What You'll Do

  • Perform ongoing space imaging operations and geometric calibration activities to maintain high standards of spatial data.
  • Design and implement scalable automated processes to calibrate hundreds of satellites, ensuring compliance with specifications and SLAs.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop performance models, error budgets, and calibration concepts for our high-resolution satellite constellation.
  • Troubleshoot geometric image quality issues and develop long-term solutions to enhance image quality.
  • Drive performance characterization and serve as a lead investigator for complex image quality issues.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of industry experience with statistical processing and analysis techniques of large measurement datasets.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Photogrammetry, Engineering, Physics, or Mathematics relevant to geometric characterization of space imaging platforms.
  • Hands-on, can-do attitude with excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate effectively.
  • Understanding of the end-to-end image processing chain from sensor electronics to geometric characterization.
  • Extensive experience with scientific computing using Python in a Unix/Linux environment.
  • Knowledge of scaling code with cloud computing resources, such as AWS or GCP.
  • Practical experience in solving problems using large cloud-based datasets.

Nice to Have

  • 5+ years of remote sensing experience and a track record of software automation in imagery analysis.
  • Master’s degree or PhD in a relevant scientific or engineering field.
  • Hands-on experience with calibrating and operating very high-resolution optical satellites.
  • Familiarity with the design and construction of imaging/capture/camera hardware.
  • Active contributions to open-source projects.
