Senior Engineer - Core Workflow Engine for AI Automation

About the Role

We are seeking a Senior Engineer to join our team at n8n, where you will play a pivotal role in building and evolving our core workflow engine. This Senior Engineer remote position allows you to work from anywhere in Europe, contributing to a platform that empowers users to automate processes with the speed of no-code and the flexibility of code.

What You'll Do

• Develop and enhance core platform foundations that support n8n’s workflow engine and frontend platform.
• Contribute to backend subsystems such as durable workflow execution, orchestration patterns, and queue/task distribution.
• Implement best practices for system reliability and resilience across cloud and self-hosted environments.
• Improve data architecture and database performance to ensure high reliability and maintainability.
• Work on frontend platform primitives to create complex workflow building experiences.
• Enhance real-time collaboration capabilities and optimize rendering performance.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate platform changes smoothly.
• Support peers through code reviews and knowledge sharing.

Requirements

• Strong systems thinking mindset with a focus on correctness and reliability.
• Experience in system design and ability to articulate technical choices clearly.
• Proficiency in TypeScript and experience with large, evolving codebases.
• Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
• Experience in building backend systems using Node.js and TypeScript.
• Understanding of distributed systems and data architecture.
• For frontend-focused candidates: experience with complex frontend systems and performance optimization.
