Senior Embedded Systems Engineer - Healthcare Technology

$130K–$160K/year

About the Role

We are seeking a Senior Embedded Systems Engineer to join our innovative team at West-Com Nurse Call Systems, Inc. This Senior Embedded Systems Engineer remote position offers a unique opportunity to lead the architecture of a next-generation healthcare communication device. You will play a pivotal role in integrating edge AI processing and advanced audio capture technologies to enhance clinical communication.

What You'll Do

  • Architect and own the embedded platform for our next-generation product, from room-level edge devices to floor-level AI processing infrastructure.
  • Lead technical integration of edge AI modules running real-time audio processing and classification pipelines.
  • Manage the interface between the audio DSP subsystem and the AI inference engine, ensuring clean signal handoff and low-latency processing.
  • Serve as the primary technical liaison with outsourced DSP/audio and ML/AI engineering partners, reviewing their work, managing integration, and ensuring knowledge transfers to our internal team.
  • Design the communication architecture between room-level devices and facility-level processing servers over enterprise IP networks.
  • Collaborate with existing hardware engineers on PCB integration, thermal management, and enclosure design for medical-grade reliability.
  • Drive the system through UL/CSA certification and any applicable FDA regulatory processes.
  • Establish embedded software development practices including CI/CD for firmware and remote diagnostics.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of embedded systems engineering experience, with at least 3 years in a technical lead or architect role.
  • Deep experience with Linux-based embedded platforms (Yocto, Buildroot, or similar).
  • Hands-on experience with NVIDIA Jetson family or comparable ARM-based AI edge platforms.
  • Strong understanding of real-time audio processing pipelines, I2S/TDM interfaces, and DSP integration.
  • Proficiency in C/C++ for embedded systems, with working knowledge of Python for AI/ML tooling.
  • Familiarity with hardware design collaboration — you can read schematics, review PCB layouts, and work alongside hardware engineers on board bring-up.
  • Experience with regulatory certification processes (UL, FCC, CE) for electronic products.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with medical device development or healthcare technology (IEC 62304, ISO 13485).
  • Experience deploying speech/audio AI models to edge hardware.
  • Understanding of hospital IT infrastructure (HL7/FHIR, clinical network security, HIPAA technical safeguards).

What We Offer

  • Competitive salary that goes further: your compensation buys significantly more in Arizona than equivalent roles in the Bay Area, Los Angeles, or Seattle.
  • Relocation assistance for qualified candidates currently located outside of Arizona.
  • Flexible hybrid work schedule with on-site presence required during critical development phases.
  • Opportunity to work in a thriving embedded engineering community in the Greater Phoenix Area.
  • Comprehensive benefits package including health insurance and retirement plans.
