Merchant Sales & Solution Engineer - Remote
About the Role
We are seeking a Merchant Sales & Solution Engineer - Remote to join our team at Automattic. In this role, you will build our technical sales motion from the ground up, architecting merchant solutions that leverage the WordPress/WooCommerce ecosystem. This is a unique opportunity to work with midmarket merchants ($1M-$50M GMV) and help them evaluate WooCommerce in competitive situations.
What You'll Do
- Carry quota for net-new Midmarket merchants, focusing on inbound, event, and partner-generated leads.
- Lead discovery sessions to provide immediate value, solving merchant problems from the first conversation.
- Architect comprehensive solutions that blend WooCommerce core and plugins with strategic partner solutions.
- Deliver customized demos that showcase exactly what merchants need to see.
- Build compelling business cases demonstrating the total cost of ownership across the platform.
- Own the closing process, navigating procurement and addressing objections effectively.
- Set the standard for solution patterns and integration blueprints that will become the playbook for scale.
- Document successful deal patterns and create repeatable assets for future use.
Requirements
- 5-7+ years of experience in Solutions/Sales Engineering or technical sales with quota-carrying experience in Ecommerce/CMS/OSS/SaaS.
- Hands-on WordPress/WooCommerce development experience, including building plugins and debugging integrations.
- Fluency in PHP and understanding of REST APIs, webhooks, and caching/CDN.
- Proven track record of closing deals and crafting creative demos that shift decisions.
- Strong storytelling skills to translate technical architecture into business narratives.
Nice to Have
- Experience selling ecommerce platforms and understanding AI-driven commerce.
- Familiarity with compliance standards such as PCI and SOC 2.
- Sales methodology training (e.g., MEDDPICC, Challenger).
