Engineering Manager - Cloud & DevSecOps
About the Role
The Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) is seeking an Engineering Manager, Cloud & DevSecOps to lead a high-impact group driving our cloud-first, Kubernetes-based infrastructure. As one of NASA’s science operations centers, STScI supports some of the most advanced scientific missions on the planet. In this Engineering Manager, Cloud & DevSecOps remote role, you will guide the engineers who ensure our cloud platforms are scalable, secure, cost-efficient, and ready for mission-critical workloads that serve the global astronomy community.
What You'll Do
- Oversee a team responsible for Cloud & Platform engineering.
- Build and operate AWS cloud infrastructure using modern, cloud-native engineering practices.
- Manage secure, reliable Kubernetes platforms (EKS and related tooling) for product and mission teams.
- Implement and mature DevSecOps automation, CI/CD to enable platforms.
- Partner with Security to support Zero Trust, IAM best practices, CSPM, and compliance activities.
- Define SLOs, operational readiness, observability standards, and platform health metrics.
- Prioritize engineering backlogs, coordinate work across teams, and ensure roadmap alignment.
- Lead a team of cloud DevSecOps engineers, providing mentorship, coaching, performance management, and career development opportunities.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent experience.
- 7+ years in cloud, infrastructure, platform, or DevOps engineering.
- 3+ years leading engineers as a manager, team lead, or technical lead.
- Hands-on AWS expertise, including networking, IAM, and multi-account design.
- Strong experience operating Kubernetes platforms (EKS, Rancher, OpenShift, or similar).
- Proficiency with IaC (Terraform preferred).
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines, automation, and security scanning.
- Knowledge of observability tooling: metrics, logs, traces (OpenTelemetry, Datadog, etc.).
- Excellent communication and leadership skills, with a collaborative, support-focused mindset.
Nice to Have
- Experience operating in regulated or high-assurance environments (NIST, FedRAMP, NASA, DoD).
- AWS Certifications (Architect, DevOps Engineer, SysOps, Cloud Practitioner).
- Knowledge of modern IAM standards (OIDC, SAML, Okta, Auth0, Cognito).
- Familiarity with policy-as-code or compliance automation.
