Director of Design - Remote Opportunity in HealthTech

About the Role

We are seeking a Director of Design to lead our design initiatives at InStride Health. This fully remote position allows you to shape the future of pediatric mental health care through innovative design. As the Director of Design, you will create a design vision that harmonizes technical innovation with clinical warmth, ensuring our technology remains approachable for families and clinicians alike.

What You'll Do

• Define a multi-year design roadmap that balances high-tech innovation with clinical warmth, ensuring InStride's digital presence feels supportive and approachable.
• Collaborate with Engineering and Product leadership to build scalable systems that transition projects from vision to reality.
• Set interaction principles and emotional guidelines for technology and AI use, ensuring alignment with InStride's mission of compassionate care.
• Establish core design principles as guardrails for the InStride UI, enabling cross-functional partners to make safe, consistent design decisions.
• Lead a versatile design organization, mentoring team members to deliver intuitive, high-quality experiences.
• Champion a culture of evidence by establishing methodologies for user research and discovery, grounding design decisions in clinical insights and patient feedback.
• Own the design organization's operational strategy, including headcount planning and budgeting for design tools.
• Partner with Marketing and Growth leadership to ensure a seamless transition between our external brand identity and internal digital products.

Requirements

• 8+ years of experience in Product Design, with a proven track record of leading teams through scale and technological transition.
• Exceptional ability to deconstruct complex healthcare problems into scalable design systems.
• Success in leading design for systems that serve a broad range of users, from professional tools to consumer experiences.
• Proven ability to implement modern tools and AI to automate the design-to-code lifecycle.
• Strong strategic and clinical judgment, making trade-offs between business speed and clinical safety.
• Experience in a clinical or regulated health tech environment, understanding design quality's correlation to patient trust and safety.

Nice to Have

• Experience with HIPAA compliance and data privacy standards.
• Familiarity with WCAG accessibility requirements.
• Previous experience in mentoring design teams.
