Principal Backend Engineer - Remote Gaming Opportunities
About the Role
We are seeking a highly experienced Principal Backend Engineer to join our remote team at The Multiplayer Group (MPG). In this role, you will work closely with a diverse group of backend engineers to deliver and deploy backend services for industry-leading game projects. As a Principal Backend Engineer remote, you'll play a crucial role in defining the technical architecture for major game titles and ensuring implementation quality.
What You'll Do
- Act as the key engineering contact for external co-dev clients, collaborating with the Technical Director and Lead to architect solutions that balance technical idealism with production pragmatism.
- Define the technical architecture for major game titles and mentor the engineering team.
- Architect systems, write code, and manage deployments.
- Translate client requirements into actionable tasks for yourself and team members.
- Make informed trade-offs to design systems based on performance, time, and budget considerations.
- Cultivate engineering best practices across teams, including modular design, code quality, and testing.
- Mentor and guide team members towards professional accreditation and technical leadership.
Requirements
- Proven experience in game development with multiple shipped titles or similar products with a high concurrent user count.
- Experience architecting distributed applications for hundreds of thousands of concurrent users.
- Proficient in at least one of the following: Java, Golang, C#, C++, Kotlin; experience with Python, Node.js, and React is a plus.
- Solid database experience with SQL and NoSQL databases.
- Proven experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure; AWS Certification (Professional level) is advantageous.
- Experience building backend infrastructure using infrastructure as code tools like Terraform.
- Proficient with Kubernetes and Docker for building scalable products.
- Excellent communication skills to discuss technical strategies with non-technical stakeholders.
Nice to Have
- Deep expertise in backend technology areas such as DevOps, Microservices, or Cloud Architecture.
- Experience with Unreal or Unity game engines.
- Understanding of using LLMs to process and query structured and unstructured data.
