About the Role

Hippo is recruiting a Lead Python Developer to join our Hippo Herd. This Lead Python Developer remote position offers the opportunity to work in multi-disciplinary teams that build, support, and maintain user-centered digital solutions that provide real value for everyone.

As a Lead Python Developer, you will act as a lead consultant, providing technical expertise in software engineering practices both internally and to our clients. You will lead teams, manage projects, drive technical deliverables, maintain client relationships, and be passionate about developing and upskilling others.

We leverage deep data insights and continuous innovation to deliver exceptional platforms that allow our customers to maximize their data and digital services. The Lead Python Developer will be a key player and implementer in this mission.

What You'll Do

  • Act as a technical SME within the squad to ensure user-centered software is developed based on business requirements and following best practices.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to explore, design, and deliver solutions to client problems.
  • Design and manage software development and deployment pipelines, resolving issues and potential bottlenecks before they occur.
  • Continuously review and prioritize the delivery team's workload, anticipating the need for realignment with evolving operational priorities and complex work-streams.
  • Communicate and present prototypes, solutions, and progress to internal/external stakeholders clearly and concisely.
  • Build strong relationships with your team and stakeholders, ensuring challenges are overcome.
  • Participate in the recruitment, onboarding, and line management of other engineers, supporting their professional development.
  • Promote Hippo’s Engineering Herd externally through blogs, workshops, seminars, or conferences.

Requirements

  • Experience leading a delivery team to deliver high-quality, robust solutions.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, able to articulate in both technical and non-technical terms depending on the audience.
  • Full development lifecycle experience delivering user-centered digital solutions.
  • Full stack development experience using Python, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
  • Experience with JavaScript libraries and frameworks such as Node, React, or Angular is preferable.
  • Containerization experience with Docker or Kubernetes or similar.
  • Experience in Microservices design and architecture.
  • RESTful API Services experience.
  • Experience working within agile methods using techniques such as Scrum, Kanban, and TDD.
  • Skilled in designing and building native and web applications across various scales and platform environments.
  • Infrastructure as Code experience with CloudFormation, Terraform, or ARM or similar.
  • Expertise in public cloud (AWS or Azure) and DevOps.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD tools such as Jenkins, AWS CodeBuild, Azure DevOps, and Atlassian.
  • Previous experience working on GOV/NHS projects is highly desirable.
