Cryogenic Engineer - Remote Opportunity in Fusion Energy

$120K–$150K/year

About the Role

Join us in our mission to commercialize fusion energy as a Cryogenic Engineer remote. At Type One Energy, we are dedicated to providing sustainable and affordable fusion power to the world. Established in 2019 and venture-backed in 2023, our team consists of globally recognized fusion scientists and experienced business leaders. If you share our vision and are searching for innovative ideas, we invite you to apply.

What You'll Do

  • Design, analyze, and validate cryogenic systems that support superconducting magnets and other low-temperature components in our stellarator program.
  • Perform analytical thermodynamic, fluid dynamics, and heat transfer calculations on cryogenic systems to support design and performance evaluation.
  • Conduct numerical analysis and modeling of cryogenic systems, including transient and steady-state behavior.
  • Support the design, specification, and integration of cryogenic hardware such as piping, heat exchangers, insulation systems, valves, and cryogenic distribution components.
  • Develop and maintain system-level thermal/fluid models to inform design decisions.
  • Collaborate closely with magnet engineering, vacuum systems, plasma physics, and power systems teams to ensure cryogenic system compatibility and performance.
  • Analyze experimental and operational data to validate models and identify system improvements.
  • Support cryogenic system testing, commissioning, troubleshooting, and operations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Cryogenic Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Physics, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience in analytical thermodynamics, heat transfer, and fluid dynamics calculations.
  • Experience performing analytical numerical analysis of thermal/fluid systems using tools such as ANSYS, COMSOL, OpenFOAM, AFT Arrow, REFPROP, GASPAK, HePAK, or similar.
  • Understanding of cryogenic system design principles, instrumentation, and materials behavior at low temperatures.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work cross-functionally in a collaborative engineering environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Nice to Have

  • Master’s or Ph.D. in a relevant engineering discipline.
  • Experience with cryogenic systems for superconducting magnets, fusion devices, particle accelerators, or space systems.
  • Familiarity with cryogenic fluids such as liquid helium and liquid nitrogen, including behavior, handling, and hazards.
  • Experience in system-level modeling, controls integration, and data analysis.
  • Experience in creating PFDs, P&IDs, and conducting HAZAN, HAZOPS for such systems is highly preferred.
  • Experience in a fast-paced R&D or startup environment.

What We Offer

  • A highly competitive salary with a yearly bonus.
  • A hybrid work policy allowing for flexibility.
  • Stock options as part of your compensation package.
  • Relocation allowance to assist with moving costs.
  • Comprehensive insurance plans.
  • Retirement options to secure your future.
  • Many more great voluntary benefits.

At Type One Energy, we apply proven advanced manufacturing methods, modern computational physics, and high-field superconducting magnets to develop our optimized stellarator fusion energy system. Our FusionDirect development program pursues the lowest-risk, shortest-schedule path to a fusion power plant over the coming decade.
