AI Engineer/​Researcher - Large Language Models (Remote)

About the Role

We are seeking an AI Engineer/Researcher to join our innovative team at Wave Group. This AI Engineer/Researcher remote position focuses on developing advanced AI systems that model and simulate complex real-world behavior. As part of a small, highly technical team, you will work at the intersection of large language models, agent systems, and scalable backend infrastructure.

What You'll Do

• Formulate research questions about human/agent behavior.
• Design experiments on synthetic populations to validate model behavior against real-world data.
• Decide on architectures and methods to implement, ensuring robust system design.
• Work on agent cognition, memory, reasoning, and orchestration.
• Ensure the underlying platform is performant, cost-efficient, and production-ready.

Requirements

• PhD/MSc or substantial research experience in AI, ML, Computer Science, Cognitive Science, Physics, Mathematics, or a related field.
• Demonstrated ability to conduct independent, hypothesis-driven research.
• Strong grounding in experimental design, statistical validation, and quantitative evaluation.
• Strong software engineering fundamentals in Python and backend frameworks like FastAPI, Flask, or Django.
• Hands-on experience working with ML/AI models (LLMs, NLP, simulation, or related areas).
• Comfortable working in ambiguity, where the right question is often unclear at the start.

Nice to Have

• Familiarity with fine-tuning workflows, model optimization, and experiment tracking.
• Experience with multi-agent systems, simulations, or agent-based modeling.
• Experience building workflows/agents on top of existing models.
• Knowledge of relational databases and vector search/embedding systems.
• Experience with cloud infrastructure, containerization, and deploying ML systems to production.
• Experience working in fast-moving environments with evolving requirements.

• Salary range of £80,000 - £150,000 based on experience.
