We’re hiring a Senior Staff Backend Engineer to join our innovative team at Monzo. This remote role allows you to work flexibly while making a significant impact in the FinTech space. As a Senior Staff Backend Engineer, you will lead engineering efforts and shape the technical direction of our backend systems.

What You'll Do

• Partner with Engineering Directors to define the technical and product direction, leading multiple squads of engineers.
• Engage in hands-on coding and architecture, setting a high standard for technical excellence.
• Collaborate with Product and Design teams to create impactful strategies and roadmaps.
• Mobilize teams around high-impact problems, ensuring clarity and alignment.
• Influence architectural decisions for complex systems, ensuring scalable and cohesive designs.
• Mentor and develop senior engineers, fostering a culture of continuous improvement.

Requirements

• Proven experience leading complex backend systems and driving technical direction.
• Strong technical judgment combined with product and business awareness.
• Experience with scalable backend, distributed, or data-intensive systems.
• Ability to navigate ambiguous problem spaces and guide teams effectively.
• Excellent communication skills to influence stakeholders across various teams.

Nice to Have

• Familiarity with Go, Cassandra, Kafka, Kubernetes, Docker, AWS, and GCP.
• Experience in open-source contributions.
• Passion for mentoring and developing future engineering leaders.
