Senior Research Scientist - Spatial AI and Data Science

About the Role

We are seeking a Senior Research Scientist in Spatial AI and Data Science to join our team at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. In this role, you will lead and contribute to groundbreaking research and development in spatial artificial intelligence (AI) and data science, focusing on innovative applications that address complex geospatial problems. As a Senior Research Scientist in Spatial AI and Data Science remote, you will have the opportunity to work with a diverse team and engage in interdisciplinary projects that leverage spatial big data and high-performance computing.

What You'll Do

• Conduct original research in spatial AI and geospatial data science, developing advanced algorithms and models for real-world applications.
• Design and implement software tools for spatial data analysis, machine learning, and AI-driven geospatial applications.
• Lead interdisciplinary projects, collaborating with external partners and stakeholders to translate research outcomes into impactful applications.
• Mentor and supervise graduate students and academic staff involved in spatial AI and data science projects.
• Develop and maintain reproducible workflows, technical documentation, and project reports.
• Present research findings at conferences and contribute to scholarly publications.
• Provide technical support and training to faculty and staff on spatial AI and data science capabilities.

Requirements

• Ph.D. in computer science, geographic information science, or a related field.
• Demonstrated research experience in spatial AI and geospatial data science.
• Three years or more of programming experience with Python, C/C++, or Java.
• Experience with machine learning frameworks such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, and geospatial libraries like GDAL and GeoPandas.
• Proven ability to manage or supervise research teams effectively.

Nice to Have

• Experience with commercial and/or open-source GIS tools and technologies.
• Familiarity with parallel computing (e.g., MPI, Spark) and cloud computing (e.g., AWS, OpenStack).
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills in spatial data science and AI.
• Ability to communicate effectively with diverse scientific and engineering backgrounds.
