About the Role

We are seeking a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer - Instruments to join our innovative team at Intuitive Surgical. This Senior Mechanical Design Engineer remote position focuses on the mechanical design of surgical instruments, contributing to the exploration of novel system concepts and optimizing established systems for surgical robotics applications. What You'll Do

  • Design and develop novel robotic surgical instruments, including component procurement and prototype assembly.
  • Collaborate with a cross-functional team to define product requirements and functional specifications.
  • Analyze and test product prototype designs, critically assess results, and present findings to the engineering team.
  • Prepare written protocols, reports, and presentations, and conduct technical design reviews to gather feedback.
  • Document mechanical design and manufacturing processes, including inspection procedures and assembly instructions.
  • Create and maintain SolidWorks CAD databases, including components and detailed drawings.
  • Contribute to risk assessments and make decisions based on industry standards and regulatory frameworks.
  • Engage with clinical experts to inform designs and identify user needs through workflow analysis.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 8 years of experience developing commercial medical products.
  • Proven ability to work in cross-functional R&D teams.
  • Expertise in evaluating designs via prototype testing and rigorous mathematical analysis.
  • Experience with materials such as metals and plastics, and familiarity with fabrication methods.
  • Proficiency in CAD design, preferably SolidWorks.
  • Knowledge of GD&T and ASME/ISO drafting standards.
  • Experience with all phases of the product development lifecycle.
  • Familiarity with FDA QSR 21 CFR Part 820 and ISO 13485 standards.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with robotics and electromechanical design.
  • Familiarity with design of experiments (DoEs) and statistical reviews.
  • Knowledge of PCBAs, sensors, and flexible circuits.
