Senior Engineering Manager - Design System Remote

About the Role

We are looking for a Senior Engineering Manager - Design System Remote to join GitLab, the intelligent orchestration platform for DevSecOps. In this role, you will lead a focused team of engineers responsible for the Pajamas Design System and the documentation platform, docs.gitlab.com. This is a unique opportunity to define engineering leadership within a design organization and make a significant impact on how we develop software.

What You'll Do

• Lead, mentor, and grow a high-performing team of engineers working across the Pajamas Design System and GitLab documentation site.
• Define and build the engineering practice within Upstream Studios, influencing how it takes shape.
• Guide architecture and technical decisions for the design system and documentation site, focusing on performance, reliability, and localization.
• Advocate for engineering quality, addressing technical debt, accessibility standards, and security issues.
• Collaborate with Product Design and Technical Writing to translate design and content needs into scalable technical solutions.

Requirements

• Experience leading infrastructure, platform, or development teams with a track record of building high-performing teams.
• Deep expertise in design systems, including design tokens, component architecture, and accessibility standards.
• Excellent technical background with professional experience in Git, docs-as-code, and building and maintaining design systems.
• Experience with multi-lingual sites and localization workflows at scale.
• Proficiency in JavaScript (Vue.js) and familiarity with Elasticsearch, Ruby/Go, and CI/CD practices.
