Research Resources Library Internship - Remote
About the Role
We are excited to offer a Research Resources Library Internship - Remote at the Whitney Museum of American Art. This internship provides undergraduate and graduate students with a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in library operations within a museum setting. As a Research Resources Library Intern, you will commit between 16–21 hours per week over 10–12 weeks, totaling 200 hours, to assist with various library tasks.
What You'll Do
- Create original and copy cataloging in MARC for library materials.
- Develop preservation housings for Library Special Collections materials.
- Assist in providing both in-person and remote reference services.
- Support the circulation of library materials.
- Supervise the reading room and assist on-site researchers.
- Handle reference inquiries from staff and external researchers.
Requirements
- Current student or recent graduate in a Library and Information Science program or a related graduate program.
- Experience with library cataloging (MARC, RDA, LCSH, LC classification) and/or preservation is a plus.
- Strong interest in modern and contemporary American art and museum work.
- Ability to work independently with a keen attention to detail.
- Experience with conducting research using an Integrated Library System (ILS).
- Ability to lift cartons (up to 30lbs) is helpful.
Nice to Have
- Familiarity with library metadata standards.
- Previous internship experience in a library or museum setting.
- Strong communication skills.
