About the Role

We are seeking a talented Machine Learning Engineer to join our Vertical Ranking Team at SmartNews. This remote Machine Learning Engineer position offers a unique opportunity to leverage your skills in machine learning to create impactful solutions that enhance user engagement and drive revenue growth.

What You'll Do

• Translate business goals and product strategies into effective machine learning solutions that power personalized experiences at scale.
• Design, experiment with, and optimize ranking strategies that influence user engagement, retention, and monetization across SmartNews platforms.
• Collaborate with Product, Business, and engineering teams to identify opportunities and define success metrics.
• Deliver measurable improvements through data-driven experimentation and continuous model refinement.
• Utilize large-scale behavioral data and advanced modeling techniques to enhance the recommendation pipeline.

Requirements

• Business-level proficiency in Japanese to collaborate effectively with local stakeholders.
• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Statistics, Mathematics, or a related field.
• Strong foundation in machine learning fundamentals, including supervised learning and model evaluation.
• Proficiency in Python and experience with ML frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow.
• Solid coding skills with attention to code quality and maintainability.
• Experience with data processing tools like SQL, Pandas, or Spark.
• Understanding of A/B testing methodologies and basic statistical analysis.
• Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to translate business questions into data-driven approaches.

Nice To Have

• Internship or project experience in recommendation systems or personalization domains.
• Hands-on experience with large-scale data processing frameworks.
• Familiarity with deep learning models used in recommendation systems.
• Exposure to model deployment and production ML workflows.
• Contributions to open-source projects or participation in Kaggle competitions.
