Senior Staff Software Engineer - Remote Role with High Impact

$190K–$220K/year

About the Role

We are seeking a Senior Staff Software Engineer to join our dynamic team in a remote capacity. This role offers the opportunity to work with a well-capitalized, global business that is building a lean, startup-style engineering function. You will own, modernize, and scale critical internal platforms, operating with real autonomy and minimal red tape.

What You'll Do

  • Design, write, and optimize complex SQL Server queries and data models.
  • Build high-throughput systems capable of processing millions of events per minute with sub-second latency.
  • Develop production-grade backend systems in Python, with experience in Go, Rust, or Java being advantageous.
  • Architect and scale microservices and event-driven systems.
  • Build and maintain real-time and batch data pipelines using technologies like Kafka, Spark, and Flink.
  • Design and develop scalable APIs (REST, GraphQL, gRPC).
  • Implement caching and search layers using Redis, Memcached, and Elasticsearch/OpenSearch.
  • Work with distributed databases such as PostgreSQL and ClickHouse.
  • Contribute to AI-adjacent initiatives including vector databases and embedding systems.
  • Rapidly prototype and ship internal tools and dashboards.
  • Own systems end-to-end rather than handing work off to vendors.
  • Support and improve live, business-critical platforms.
  • Optimize application, database, and system performance.
  • Collaborate directly with internal stakeholders to turn urgent needs into working software.
  • Operate in a fast-moving environment where priorities shift and delivery matters.

Requirements

  • Must haves: Expert-level Microsoft SQL Server and deep understanding of performance optimization and complex querying.
  • Expert-level Python, Go, or Java in production environments.
  • Proven experience building and scaling high-throughput, low-latency systems.
  • Strong knowledge of distributed systems, microservices, and event-driven architecture.
  • Hands-on experience with data pipeline and streaming technologies (Kafka, Spark, Flink).
  • Experience with caching technologies and search platforms.
  • Genuine full-stack capability across database and data pipelines, application/business logic, and APIs.

Nice to Have

  • Exposure to ERP or financial systems.
  • Experience with analytics, automation, or AI/ML infrastructure.
  • Knowledge of cloud data services across AWS and Azure.
  • Background in cybersecurity data processing or SIEM platforms.
  • Familiarity with compliance frameworks (GDPR, SOC2).
  • Advanced degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, or related field.

What We Offer

  • Ownership of high-impact, business-critical systems.
  • Greenfield work alongside modernization of existing platforms.
  • Direct access to senior stakeholders.
  • Exposure to advanced data, AI, and large-scale distributed systems initiatives.
  • Competitive compensation, flexible for exceptional profiles.
