About the Role

TalentCo is excited to announce an opening for a Lead AI Engineer remote position. This role is perfect for a high-caliber engineer looking to make a significant impact in an AI startup that has recently secured substantial seed funding. As a remote-first position based in the UK, you will be a vital part of a growing engineering team, driving the technical evolution of the client's AI-first platform.

What You'll Do

  • Architect & Engineer AI Systems: You will build robust processing architectures that leverage off-the-shelf LLMs, RAG pipelines, and context engineering to solve complex problems.
  • Build the Backend Foundation: Spend significant time in Python (FastAPI, SQLAlchemy) developing the APIs, data structures, and services that power the product.
  • Close the Data Loop: Lead the transition from zero-shot implementations to data-driven optimization, instrumenting data collection and deploying effective ML models.
  • Mentor & Lead: Work alongside full-stack engineers, upskilling the team on AI concepts and best practices.
  • Strategically Advise: Help Product and Leadership navigate valuable features that achieve business impact through data-driven optimization.

Requirements

  • Production Engineering: 5+ years of experience as a strong software engineer, with extensive backend service experience in Python.
  • Applied AI Architecture: Experience building complex applications using Foundation Models / LLMs.
  • Team-Oriented Mindset: Strong communication skills for explaining complex ideas to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Passion for Shipping: A do-whatever-it-takes attitude to deliver against important business goals.
  • Pragmatic Best Practices: Desire to build efficient, scalable, and maintainable code while managing technical debt.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with modern cloud providers (GCP/AWS).
  • Familiarity with async frameworks like FastAPI.
  • Understanding of context window management and prompting strategies.
