Engineering Manager - Database Reliability (Remote)

About the Role

We are seeking an Engineering Manager - Database Reliability to join our team at Wave. This is a fully remote position where you will lead a critical team responsible for ensuring our databases are reliable and scalable as we continue to grow rapidly. As an Engineering Manager - Database Reliability, you will play a key role in shaping the future of financial services in Africa, making it the first cashless continent.

What You'll Do

• Lead the database reliability team to ensure Wave’s databases maintain high availability and performance.
• Support engineers in architecting, maintaining, and evolving reliable database technologies across multiple environments.
• Mentor and coach a diverse, globally distributed team of database engineers.
• Shape processes like incident response, postmortems, and capacity planning to ensure smooth operations.
• Collaborate with infrastructure, product, and security teams on platform database initiatives.
• Drive best practices for monitoring, cost optimization, and performance tuning in Postgres, CockroachDB, and future databases.
• Hire and grow the team, shaping Wave’s database reliability culture and standards.

Requirements

• 5+ years of experience in database management and engineering.
• Strong knowledge of database technologies, particularly Postgres and CockroachDB.
• Experience with cloud infrastructure, preferably GCP and Terraform.
• Proficiency in backend programming languages, especially Python.
• Experience with orchestration tools like Kubernetes.
• Ability to mentor and lead a team effectively.
• Excellent communication skills in a remote work environment.

Nice to Have

• Experience with GraphQL APIs.
• Familiarity with mobile development (Kotlin for Android, Swift for iOS).
• Knowledge of TypeScript and React for web development.
