Director of Data - Remote Leadership Role

About the Role

We are looking for a Director of Data to join Alpaca in a fully remote capacity. As a leader in our data department, you will oversee a talented team of approximately 15 data professionals across various disciplines, including Platform Engineering, Analytics Engineering, and Data Science. This role is pivotal in shaping our data strategy and executing the department's roadmap, ensuring that our data capabilities align with our ambitious vision of democratizing financial services.

What You'll Do

• Lead and develop three sub-teams: Platform Engineering & ETL, Analytics Engineering, and Data Science & Analytics.
• Manage team leads, set priorities, and ensure timely delivery of projects.
• Own the Data Lakehouse architecture, utilizing tools such as Trino, Iceberg/GCS, Airflow, and dbt.
• Drive the accuracy and evolution of partner invoicing, ensuring scalability with new pricing mechanisms.
• Deliver embedded analytics by exposing warehouse data to partners through API-based reporting.
• Support product launches with comprehensive data change management and impact analysis.
• Accelerate the transition to self-service analytics, empowering non-technical stakeholders with tools for strategic decision-making.
• Guide AI/ML enablement initiatives, including enterprise AI search and LLM-powered analytics.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate business needs into actionable data products.
• Manage infrastructure costs, maintaining a favorable data to cloud cost ratio as usage grows.

Requirements

• 8+ years of experience in data engineering or analytics, with at least 3 years in a managerial role.
• Deep understanding of the modern data stack, including dbt, Trino/Presto, and cloud object storage solutions.
• Hands-on experience with ETL/ELT patterns at scale, including CDC and batch processing.
• Proficiency in Python and SQL, with the ability to read code and make architectural decisions.
• Experience managing distributed teams across multiple time zones.
• Strong stakeholder management skills, capable of bridging executive priorities with engineering execution.
• Familiarity with GCP, Kubernetes, and Terraform.

Nice to Have

• Experience in brokerage or broker-dealer operations.
• Familiarity with LLM/AI tooling and compliance analytics.
• Exposure to open-source data catalogues and data quality frameworks.
