Senior Software Engineer - Privacy Focus for Wikimedia

About the Role

Wikimedia is seeking a Senior Software Engineer (Privacy) to join our Product Safety and Integrity team. In this remote role, you will build essential security features to protect Wikipedia and our other projects. As a Senior Software Engineer, you will work closely with a team of engineers and product managers to design and implement features that ensure user safety and platform resilience against attacks.

What You'll Do

• Help design, develop, and deliver security features with a focus on safety and security.
• Collaborate with other engineering teams to ensure safe and compliant architectural choices.
• Lead by example in code reviews, decision-making, and fostering a culture of transparency and collaboration.
• Develop, review, and deploy security features created by the Foundation and community members.
• Conduct internal and external security and privacy reviews.
• Maintain and address technical debt in security-critical components.
• Provide support for application security and privacy incidents.

Requirements

• 5+ years of experience as a software engineer, ideally focused on security or privacy.
• Ability to work effectively in a modern web application environment, primarily using PHP and JavaScript.
• Experience in developing secure software or security-related product features.
• Strong interest in collaborating with a talented security team and learning specialist security skills.
• Ability to explain complex security issues to non-technical audiences.
• Experience working in a remote, distributed team.

Nice to Have

• Experience with anti-abuse mechanisms, such as bot detection.
• Previous experience building security countermeasures against web and backend attacks.
• Knowledge of threat modeling and secure design patterns.
• Contributions to open-source software.
