About the Role

We are seeking a Staff Engineer to join our team at Preply, where you will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of education through technology. This Staff Engineer remote position allows you to work from anywhere while contributing to our mission of creating life-changing learning experiences. As a Staff Engineer, you will operate at the intersection of product, engineering, and business, driving strategy, architecture, and execution for critical areas of Preply.

What You'll Do

• Shape technical strategy and drive execution, partnering with engineering and product leadership to define the tribe’s engineering strategy and technical roadmap.
• Lead end-to-end strategic initiatives, translating product vision into clear technical execution, aligning scope, milestones, and delivering measurable outcomes iteratively.
• Act as a key architect for the future state of our systems, evolving core services into a scalable, reliable platform.
• Continuously improve how we build by identifying bottlenecks and driving initiatives that increase team productivity.
• Mentor and influence Senior Engineers, Tech Leads, and Engineering Managers, contributing to hiring and elevating the overall technical bar.
• Own critical technical and strategic decisions, ensuring alignment with both technical needs and business goals.

Requirements

• Strong expertise in Python, with a solid background in software engineering and architecture.
• Experience designing and evolving large-scale systems, with the ability to derive technical strategy from business goals.
• Hands-on, strategic mindset, comfortable diving into code and building proofs of concept.
• Excellent communication skills, able to articulate technical vision and influence stakeholders.
• Product-minded engineering approach, making thoughtful trade-offs that connect technical decisions to user experience.

Nice to Have

• Experience with AI technologies and their application in educational contexts.
• Familiarity with cloud platforms and microservices architecture.
• Previous experience in mentoring and shaping engineering culture.
